Food is Medicine

Please join us for the Food Is Medicine Forum, hosted by EMHS on June 7.

Kristen Miale, President of Good Shepherd Food Bank of Maine, will join a panel of experts from Maine and across the country to speak about food insecurity and efforts to build the food security network.

This is a free event, and all agencies and interested community members are encouraged to attend.  Registration is easy:  please call 973-6564 or register online by following this link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/food-is-medicine-forum-2016-registration-23445089895 .

Improving consumption of nutritious, healthy food is a crucial part of providing high quality, cost-effective health care.  Expert speakers will address the link between hunger and health, share the latest research on the high cost of hunger, the impact on seniors and children, and present examples of innovative work taking place in the US and in Maine.

The Food Is Medicine Forum is an outgrowth of EMHS’s work with Partnerships to Improve Community Health award – a three-year cooperative agreement with U.S. CDC to address determinants of health and prevent chronic disease.  EMHS is working with partners in Maine’s seven northern counties to improve access to healthy food, develop successful connections between healthcare providers and community organizations, and build a stronger prevention network.

Retail Store Pick-Up Opportunities

Take Advantage of Hannaford's Fresh Rescue Program

There are many retail store pick-ups currently available through our partnership with Hannaford’s Fresh Rescue donation program.  The Fresh Rescue program offers a variety of donations on a daily basis at all of Hannaford's store locations. Good Shepherd Food Bank partner agencies are linked with stores to receive these donations on designated days each week.  The items available include bakery/bread items, dairy, deli/meal items, meat, mixed frozen, and produce.

In 2015, more than 7.6 million pounds (the equivalent of more than 6.3 million meals) was donated directly to GSFB partner agencies through the Fresh Rescue donation program from the 61 Hannaford stores throughout Maine.  The Retail Store Program at GSFB has helped rescue millions of pounds of perishable food items annually that otherwise would have gone to animal feed or been disposed of.  Instead, those pounds of food have been redirected to our network of partner agencies to help get nutritious food to families in need throughout Maine.  These perishable food donations have been a huge benefit to our partner agency network programs, and we’d love to help you with the listed opportunities below.

Partner agencies interested in picking up from one or more of the retail store opportunities below or knowing more about the Retail Store Program and what the commitment entails, please reach out to Chris Manson, Retail Store Program Manager, cmanson@gsfb.org, 207-782-3554 x1168 or 207-240-0063 (cell).
